Letter : Maryville, Tenn., to an unidentified recipient, 1809 Dec 12.

ALS written by Gideon Blackburn to "Revd and very dear friend," regarding his work as a missionary to Cherokee Indians. Blackburn reports his observations from a tour through the Cherokee nation and through white settlements in Tennessee, including description of a wagon road built by the Cherokees, agricultural improvements made by them, and his opinions of their relations with the United States government regarding purchase of their lands. He also briefly discusses his plans for retirement from missionary work, his experiences in preaching at frontier settlements, and family news, with inquiries after "Mrs. Abby" and "Mrs. Morse," possibly relations of his correspondent. The letter is accompanied by a typed transcript.

Gideon Blackburn, a Presbyterian clergyman, was born in Virginia and settled in Maryville, Tennessee. He established a mission to the Cherokee Indians in 1803. After resigning from missionary work in 1810, Blackburn continued working as minister and educator. He died in Carlinville, Illinois, after raising an endowment for a school to be located there, later called Blackburn College.
